At the start of my “sabbatical,” I wasn’t sure what my next step would be. I knew I needed a break, so I focused on looking after myself, knowing the path would emerge. (I trust the universe.)
Here’s the thing: over the past 10 years, I’ve moved around within the games industry from User Research, to Production, to Talent Acquisition.
My longest stretches (about half the decade) have been in Talent Acquisition, but I don’t define myself solely by it. I love to learn, and as a recruiter, I’ve always advocated for candidates with transferable skills.
Now that I’m the candidate, I fell into the self-definition trap for awhile. I remodeled my Linkedin to focus on one specific type of role; I erased parts of my experience that weren’t relevant to those roles.
The end product didn’t look right. I was honest about my experience, but erasing things I’ve done (that have shaped who I am, that I’m proud of) in order to fit a narrow box just didn’t feel true to me.
So, I took a step back to determine my values. What do I care about?
I care about people. I care that we can all do our best work toward common, clear, communicated goals. I care that everyone feels empowered to use their voice, advocate for change, and co-operate to see those changes through. I value equity and authenticity.
I care about processes. I like when things work well. I care about helping people understand things, and documenting details so there’s always a source of truth. I value connecting intention with action.
As I re-emerge from the cocoon of focus on wellness and my “why,” I’m open to a wide variety of opportunities. I’m adaptable, and I see that as a strength. As a recruiter, I’ve always advocated for strong candidates with transferable skills, so it’s time to put my money where my mouth is.
I want to make safe spaces, create functional processes and documentation, and inspire others to communicate effectively and inclusively. I’m open to opportunities that match my background and skillset: Talent Acquisition, Talent Development and Strategy, Diversity and Inclusion, Education (L&D), and Communications. I’m excited to try new things, and make an impact.
Ultimately, above all, and no matter what I’m doing – the one thing I want to help build is a better world.
